Frequently Asked Questions-Fee Policy

How do I know my patient's tests will be bulk billed?

The following requirements must be met in order for your test to be bulk billed:

  • Patient has a valid Medicare number
  • Tests requested are Medicare rebatable
  • The doctor has clearly indicated to bulk bill on the request
  • Patient has signed the Medicare Assignment.

If these requirements have not been met, then the patient will receive a bill and may be charged out-of-pockets expenses.

What tests are not covered by Medicare?

Please refer to Medicare Benefits Schedule Online for the current list of Non Medicare Rebatable Tests.

If my patient is a Private Inpatient, will they receive a bill from Mater Pathology?

A Private Inpatient will receive a bill for the following reasons:

  • A Self Insured private patient is responsible for their account. Once the account is paid, a receipt will be sent out to enable the patient to claim their rebate from Medicare.
  • If the patient has private health insurance with an insurer that we have a direct bill agreement with, we will forward  their account to their insurer for payment. 
  • Any tests not covered by  Medicare  will incur a full out-of-pocket cost to the patient. This bill will be sent to the patient.

What are my payment options?

We will send an invoice and payment slip to the patient via mail. Upon receiving this, the patient has the following options for payment:

Cheque or Money Order

In Person

My patient has a Veterans’ Affair Gold Card, will they have any out-of-pocket expenses?

If your patient holds a valid Veterans Affair Gold Card, they will not receive out of pocket expenses for any services.

My patient has a Pension Card, will they have any out-of-pocket expenses?

Your patient will be charged for Non-CMBS tests i.e. tests not covered by Medicare.

My patient has a Health Care Card, will they have any out-of-pocket expenses?

Your patient will be charged for Non-CMBS tests i.e. tests not covered by Medicare. Your patient's Health Care card must be presented at every collection.

My patient has Workcover, will they have any out-of-pocket expenses?

If your patient has an open claim with Workcover , are able to provide us with their claim number and the services referred relate to their injury then we are able to bill their account to Workcover directly.

My patient is of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Descent, will they be bulk billed?

Yes as long as we have a valid Medicare number and they have signed the Medicare Assignment and the doctor has indicated bulk billing.

My patient does not hold Medicare rights within Australia i.e. they are classified as an Overseas Patient. What are their billing options?

Up-front payments are required from overseas students and visitors before testing is completed. Students and visitors with travel or health insurance should forward a copy of their paid account to the Insurer for reimbursement. This payment must be made with a credit card.
