Frequently Asked Questions-Fee Policy

How do I know my test will be bulk billed?

The following requirements must be met in order for your test to be bulk billed:

  • A valid Medicare number
  • Tests requested are Medicare rebatable
  • The doctor has clearly indicated to bulk bill on the request
  • Patient has signed the Medicare Assignment.

If these requirements have not been met, then you will receive a bill and may be charged out-of-pockets expenses.

What tests are not covered by Medicare?

Please refer to Medicare Benefits Schedule Online for the current list of Non Medicare Rebatable Tests.

If I am a Private Inpatient, will I receive a bill from Mater Pathology?

You will receive a bill for the following reasons:

  • If you are a Self Insured private patient you are responsible for your account. Once the account is paid, we will send out a receipt that will enable you to claim your rebate from Medicare.
  • If you have private health insurance with an insurer that we have a direct bill agreement with, we will forward  your account to the insurer for payment.  If we do not have a direct bill agreement with your private health insurer, your account will be sent to you.
  • Any tests not covered by  Medicare  will incur a full out-of-pocket cost to the patient. This bill will be sent to you.

What are my payment options?

We will send you your invoice and payment slip via mail. Upon receiving this, you have the following options for payment:

BPAY - Contact your participating bank, credit union or building society to make your payment directly from your bank account or credit card. When prompted, simply enter the Biller code and the Reference No. (these numbers are shown on the front of the payment slip).

Credit Card – Phone (07) 3163 8636 from 8:00am to 4:30pm (Monday to Friday). We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Cheque or Money Order – Detach the payment slip and mail to Mater Pathology PO Box 8058, Woolloongabba QLD 4102. Make your cheque or money order payable to “Mater Misericordiae Ltd Pathology”

In Person – Mater Hospital Brisbane, Cashier, Level 2, 8am – 12:30pm and 1:00pm – 3:34pm or Mater Mothers’ Hospital Level 5 (Cash, Cheque, Credit Car & EFTPOS facilities available).  

I have a Veterans’ Affair Gold Card, will I have any out-of-pocket expenses?

If you hold a valid Veterans Affair Gold Card you will not receive out of pocket expenses for any services.

I have a Pension Card, will I have any out-of-pocket expenses?

You will be charged for Non-CMBS tests i.e. tests not covered by Medicare.

I have a Health Care Card, will I have any out-of-pocket expenses?

You will be charged for Non-CMBS tests i.e. tests not covered by Medicare. Your Health Care card must be presented at every collection.

I have Workcover, will I have any out-of-pocket expenses?

If you have an open claim with Workcover , are able to provide us with your claim number and the services referred relate to your injury then we are able to bill your account to Workcover directly.

I am of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Descent, will I be bulk billed?

Yes as long as we have a valid Medicare number and you have signed the Medicare Assignment and the doctor has indicated bulk billing.

I do not hold Medicare rights within Australia i.e. I am classified as an Overseas Patient. What are my billing options?

Up-front payments are required from overseas students and visitors before testing is completed. Students and visitors with travel or health insurance should forward a copy of their paid account to the Insurer for reimbursement. This payment must be made with a credit card.
