ThinPrep Cervical Screening is now Medicare Rebatable at Mater Pathology

As of May 1st, 2017, Mater Pathology will bulk bill all Cervical Screening requests including ThinPrep™. This means patients will no longer receive out-of-pocket costs for ThinPrep™ cervical screening from May 1st.

This change has been introduced in response to Medicare changing the rebates available for cervical screening tests. Patients will now be eligible to receive a rebate for either a ThinPrep™ or conventional smear, but not both.

Routine confirmation of platelet counts at Mater Pathology

At Mater Pathology, platelet counts less than 50x10^9/L will now routinely be confirmed by the PLT-F method as this is the preferred method to make better decisions on platelet transfusions.

Introducing ANCA and anti-GBM testing by Mater Pathology

From 1 December 2016, Mater Pathology Immunbology Department will begin performing ANCA (anti-neurtrophil cytoplasmic antibody) immunolfluorescence and MPO/Pr3 ANCA testing for the the diagnosis of ANCA associated small vessel Vasculitis and GBM antibodies for the diagnosis of Goodpasture's/Anti-GBM disease (currently resported by Pathology Queensland).

Laboratory Investigation of an Inherited Bleeding Tendency

The laboratory investigation of a possible bleeding tendency should be guided by a comprehensive review of the patient's bleeding (and medical) history and by the findings of a thorough physical evaluation. 

The duration of the bleeding problem (life-long versus recent onset), type of bleeding (mucocutaneous versus deep tissues bleeding), medication history and family history all provide important information that assist the pathologist in interpreting aboratory results.

Changes to Molecular Microbiology PCR testing at Mater Pathology

Mater Pathology is transitioning to a new testing platform for molecular microbiology PCR testing of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis (NG, CT, TV) and over the next month will be upgrading from the existing analysers to the new Panther system, from HOLOGIC (Gen-Probe).

Annerley Collection Centre extends open hours

Mater Pathology have extended the operating hours in our Annerley pathology collection centre for better patient convenience and access.

The Annerley collection centre is now open Monday to Friday from 7 am to 5 pm—open earlier to accomodate fasting patients, and also closing later.

Complimentary undercover parking is available off Kent Street for patients attending the clinic.

New STI PCR panel available at Mater Pathology

Mater Pathology now offers Trichomonas vaginalis in a new PCR panel for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

In recent times, the use of PCR for diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) has become favourable over microscopy, which has been widely used until now.

A study of TV testing performed by Mater Pathology has distinguished PCR as a superior method over microscopy for diagnosis.

Medicare changes to Vitamin D billing

Changes to Viral Swabs - December 2014

Effective December 2014, Mater Pathology will change to using and supplying the bioMérieux Σ-virocult swab, incorporating a screw cap tube with a liquid transport medium.

This will replace the existing Virocult® swab with gel media currently in use, which will be phased out over the coming months.

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV 1), Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV 2) and Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) are all members of the Herpesviridae family.

Mater Pathology’s Microbiology division is now performing respiratory virus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Bordetella pertussis PCR onsite using the Qiagen Rotor-gene® Q.

Updated operating hours for our collection centre network

Mater Pathology has introduced changes to the operating hours of its collection centre network.

Some of these changes include the introduction of brief closures over the lunch period. Mater Pathology has aligned these closures with the quietest part of the day for each centre, to minimise the impact on our patients and the medical community.
