Changes to Molecular Microbiology PCR testing at Mater Pathology

November 2, 2015

Mater Pathology is transitioning to a new testing platform for molecular microbiology PCR testing of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis (NG, CT, TV) and over the next month will be upgrading from the existing analysers to the new Panther system, from HOLOGIC (Gen-Probe).

What are the benefits of this change?

  • Improved assay sensitivity and comparable assay specificity
  • Samples will no longer need to be batched, resulting in better turnaround times
  • Greater environmental efficiency and sustainable practices—resultant from fewer consumables and less waste.

How will this impact my practice?

Existing BD collection swabs used for NG, CT, TV PCR testing (blue or pink) will be phased out and superseded by the Aptima Assay collection swab kits (blue or pink)  for collection and testing; these will be automatically supplied to your practice on re-order.

When to these changes come into effect?

Changes come into full effect as of Friday 20 November. Testing can still be provided on existing BD swabs past this date, until the transition is fully complete—results will be issued with appropriate comments.
